Frontos Bodega, Granadilla, Tenerife
On a recommendation we went to Frontos. Can’t think why we haven’t been before.
Frontos is tucked away in the hills between Granadilla and Chimiche, just past Los Blanquitos if you’re heading east from Granadilla. It’s a working bodega, but with a big restaurant attached.
Ambiance: The dining room is big and airy; a big wooden construction with floor-to-ceiling glass sliding windows all round and a polished concrete floor. It’s lovely during the day with views down over the vineyards and towards the sea, but I imagine it might be a bit harsh at night as the only light comes from energy saver light bulbs. These are amusingly set in various chandaliers and shades made from wine bottles!
Service: Friendly if a little inefficient. There weren’t that many tables in but we seemed to wait an age to get our bill. Everything else turned up when it should though. No english menu which in some ways is a good sign! The staff have a little bit of english if you get really stuck, and are happy to explain any dishes you don’t understand.
Food: Mainly Canarian/Spanish. However, don’t be put off by this – the quality of the ingredients is high (except the tomatoes are still those big wet things that don’t taste of anything) and the skill in preperation is high as well. Hubby had a pork chop that was absolutely delicious, amazing crackling style rind and succulent with a big pile of chips, I had a fish dish, cod with saffron and sweet potato that was fabulous. The cod was juicy and the saffron and sweet potato was a really good combination. Being healthy we shared a salad to start which was ok, but had the tomatoes mentioned above in it. We skipped dessert – there was too much food! The bread was the better quality commercially produced stuff that you see in a few places.
Wine: They sell only their own wine. We had a rose which was lovely.
Overall: This was a fabulous way to while away the afternoon and I would definitely go again, though I would say it’s a better place for lunch than for dinner.
